With a history of nearly 50 years, this major is dedicated to cultivating versatile applied talents with all-round moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic grounding with a hard-working spirit. These professionals shall possess a solid command of the English language, a broad international perspective, and a high level of cultural literacy in both Eastern and Western contexts. They shall be adept at bilingual proficiency, possess cultural understanding, and have a broad range of expertise. They shall be familiar with local distinctive culture, have a foundational knowledge of science and technology, and be proficient in engaging in work related to foreign trade, education, translation, and the international dissemination of distinctive cultures. Within the knowledge framework, these talents showcase robust fundamental language abilities in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, hold proficiency in specific domains like translation, economics, and education, and possess a comprehension of interdisciplinary knowledge spanning science and technology, along with humanities and social sciences. In terms of the structure of capabilities, the talents are required to master scientific learning methods, rapidly absorb and internalize new knowledge, possess strong self-learning abilities, and demonstrate a robust capability for recognizing and solving problems, along with a certain level of innovation and analytical thinking skills. In the aspect of cultural literacy, the talents shall be familiar with both Eastern and Western cultures, demonstrating a strong cultural understanding and proficiency in cross-cultural communication.
Translation
In addition to receiving foundational language skills training, students in this major focus on mastering the basic skills of oral and written translation between English and Chinese. They develop the ability to continuously acquire knowledge using computer and network technologies and acquire comprehensive skills in applying professional knowledge to discover, analyze, and solve problems. Translation major aims to cultivate versatile applied translation talents with a solid command of English language skills, a broad international perspective, corresponding East-West cultural literacy, strong cross-cultural abilities, substantial expertise in translation, extensive encyclopedic knowledge, and necessary domain-specific knowledge. Graduates are expected to have certain capabilities in translation criticism and appreciation, proficiency in using translation tools, understanding local cultural characteristics, a grasp of scientific and technical knowledge, and the ability to handle basic translation tasks in different fields or engage in other cross-cultural communication roles.
Japanese
The Japanese major was established in 2008, boasting a history of nearly 15 years. Currently, it has 13 full-time faculty members, 1 adjunct faculty member, and 2 Japanese experts. The major aims to cultivate well-rounded students with all-round moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic grounding with a hard-working spirit. Students are equipped with solid Japanese language skills, a broad international perspective, and a high level of Sino-Japanese cultural literacy. They have an understanding of local cultural characteristics, grasp certain knowledge in science and technology, and become proficient in engaging in foreign trade, education, translation, and the international dissemination of cultural specialties. The program focuses on nurturing versatile applied talents with “bilingual proficiency, cultural literacy, and broad expertise”. Adopting the training models of “Foreign Language plus Professional Skills” and “Foreign Language plus Second Degree,” the major combines the promotion of local culture with external communication, leveraging various research platforms at different levels as a foundation, continually advancing collaboration between academia, industry, and research. It establishes internship bases both domestically and internationally, actively participates in the school’s internationalization development strategy, and undertakes language training for engineering talents from non-Japanese majors multiple times. Additionally, it encourages Japanese major students to pursue a second degree during their academic years, cultivating compound talents with proficiency in foreign languages and professional skills, achieving significant results in the construction of new liberal arts disciplines.
Spanish
The Spanish Major was established in 2017 and currently has 14 full-time teachers, including 8 with Ph.D. degrees and 3 doctoral candidates. The major aims to cultivate patriotic Spanish professionals who possess an international perspective, master knowledge related to the Spanish language and culture, and have proficient language skills and cross-cultural abilities. Graduates will be capable of working in fields such as foreign affairs, education, culture, and tourism, engaging in activities such as translation, teaching, research, and management. In terms of knowledge structure, the major emphasizes developing students’ fundamental language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation, as well as fostering strong language communication abilities. Regarding skill structure, students will acquire scientific learning methods, the ability to quickly absorb and internalize new knowledge, strong self-learning capabilities, problem-solving skills, and a certain level of innovation and critical thinking abilities. In terms of cultural literacy, students will be familiar with both Chinese and Western cultures, possessing good cultural understanding and cross-cultural communication skills.
Portuguese
This programme aims to supply southwest regional area of China with professional talents in Portuguese Language. In addition to a systematic introduction to the Lusophone world, this course emphasizes the development of students’ humanistic quality and ability to apply their theoretical knowledge into practical work. These goals will be reached by several means, namely adoption of diverse teaching methodology (including interactive discussion), internship and one year of study in a Lusophone country. The ultimate aim of this major is to enable graduates to demonstrate competency in Portuguese Language, Cultures and Literature of Portuguese-Speaking Countries, so that they can do research in these domains, teach in schools and universities, or work in government departments and other public/ private organizations.
The students of “Portuguese Studies” will develop skills in Portuguese Language, Culture and Literature, Didactics, Practicum, Psychology and Education Sciences, History, Economics and Society. They will also be allowed to elect one of two branches on the 3rd and 4th year. The two branches are: Teaching (A) and Studies of Community of Portuguese Language Countries (B). According to the branch he/she chooses, the student will be better prepared either to teach Portuguese or to work as a mediator between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries. This trans-disciplinary training of professionals in the area of Portuguese as a Foreign Language will provide them with a creative spirit. This human training falls under the goals of creating an open and harmonious environment for the free expression of academic views and of encouraging students to work towards self-improvement, maturity, and a willingness to serve.
