Sichuan University of Science and Engineering, established in 1965, is a full-time institution of higher learning with nearly 60 years undergraduate education and 20 years postgraduate education history in coordinated development of multiple disciplines including engineering, science, management, pedagogy, literature, history, art, law, economics, agriculture and medical science.

Situated in Zigong and Yibin, two famous historical and cultural cities, the university consists of the four campuses of Libaihe, Huidong, Yibin and Huangling, covering a total area of more than 4,600 mu, with gross floor area of 1.7 million m², and more than RMB 10 billion total value of state assets. Currently, the university boasts total paper literature of more than 3.07 million volumes, total electronic books of more than 1.65 million volumes, 10.24 degree theses, 124 Chinese and foreign language databases (including subbases), and has built 10 special database. This university has become the only one engineering dominated comprehensive university with the longest history of undergraduate education in 100,000 km² of 20 prefectures and cities around South Sichuan, West Chongqing, Northeast Yunnan and Northwest Guizhou.

The university enjoys a long history in school running and fine education tradition. Currently, the university has 24 schools, 77 undergraduate programs, 26 national and provincial first rate undergraduate programs, 13 national and provincial distinctive programs, five national excellent engineer education and cultivation plan programs, nine provincial “excellence plan” education and cultivation program, and four provincial applied pilot programs. The three disciplines of food science and engineering, chemical engineering and technology, and control science and engineering have been listed as disciplines of Sichuan Provincial “Double First Rate” Construction Gongga Plan; the two disciplines of food science and engineering, and control science and engineering have been listed as distinctive applied disciplines of Yibin municipal universities. The university boasts three national engineering practice education centers, one national college student off-campus practice education base, one provincial postdoctoral innovation practice base, four provincial teaching demo centers, four provincial virtual simulation experiment teaching centers, and one provincial talent cultivation innovation experiment zone.  In an addition, in the university there are 10 provincial applied demo courses, 43 national and provincial first rate undergraduate courses and 15 provincial “course ideology and politics” demo courses, and six provincial innovation and entrepreneurship education demo courses. The university enrolls students from 31 provinces (municipalities, and autonomous regions) and currently is home to more than 45,000 full time postgraduates, undergraduates and overseas students. Over the past half a century, more than 240,000 graduates have been cultivated by the university, and there sprung up a great many distinguished alumni in scientific, entrepreneur and educational circles including Yan Deyue, an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Zhang Liang, former chairman of the board of the directors of Luzhoy Laojiao Group Co., Ltd.

The university boasts distinctive disciplines, with the three disciplines of chemistry, engineering and material science entering 1% of ESI global universities. The university also boasts the three Sichuan provincial key disciplines of chemical technology, mode region and smart system, and fermentation engineering. The university has eight first-level discipline master’s degree programs, covering 36 second-level disciplines, and 13 professional master’s degree programs, covering 36 professional degree fields. Centering on the provincial key discipline of fermentation engineering and the provincial first rate discipline of food science and engineering, we have formed a group of light industry and food science. The university has been reputed as a “cradle of Chinese baijiu talent cultivation” and “Huangpu Military Academy of high end Chinese baijiu talent cultivation base”. Centering on the provincial key discipline of chemical technology and the provincial first rate discipline of chemical engineering and technology, we have formed a group of chemical industry and material science supported by chemical industry, environment and safety, and material science and engineering; centering on the provincial key discipline of mode recognition and smart system and the provincial first rate discipline of control science and engineering, we have formed a group of control and smart equipment disciplines supported by mode recognition and smart system, artificial intelligence, process equipment and control engineering, computer science and technology, and data science; centering on management science and engineering, we have formed a group of management and economics disciplines mainly supported by business management, accounting, agricultural and forestry economy management and regional economy; centering on pedagogy and art disciplines, we have formed a group of humanity and art disciplines supported by pedagogy, psychology, Chinese language and literature and art science.

The university has attracted a great many talents with strong expertise. It provides jobs for more than 3,300 staff members, including more than 2,500 teachers, and 40% of them are professors and associate professors. More than 80% teachers have doctoral or master’s degrees, inclusive of 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 12 national key talent plan’s specially-invited experts and national distinguished youth science fund winners. We have undertaken more than 110 national scientific research projects, and nearly 1,100 provincial and ministry-level scientific research projects, winning one national sci-tech progress award (second prize), 53 provincial and ministry-level sci-tech achievement awards, and 251 municipal and provincial department-level sci-tech achievement awards. Moreover, we have published more than 260 academic monographs and 9,304 academic papers (5,543 Chinese core journal papers included), and won 821 patents ( 408 invention patents included) . The university also boasts the national Chengguang High Performance Fluoric Material Innovation Center and a national college sci-tech park, three provincial key labs (Liquor Brewing Biotechnology and Application Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province, Artificial Intelligence Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province, Material Corrosion and Protection Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province), three Sichuan provincial philosophy and social science key research bases (China Salt Culture Research Center, Research Center for Sichuan Liquor Industry Development and Baijiu, Optimization Lab of Digital and Smart Management and Ecological Decision in the Upper Reach of the Yangtze River), one Sichuan social science popularization base of Folk Lantern Culture Popularization Base, five Sichuan provincial innovation teams, one Sichuan provincial academician (expert) work station, two Sichuan provincial engineering labs, two Sichuan provincial industry technology research institutes, five Sichuan provincial key university labs, four Sichuan provincial university humanity and social science key research bases, one Sichuan provincial tourism scientific research base, one Sichuan provincial intellectual property education and training base, 4 Sichuan provincial 2011 collaboration innovation centers, and eight Sichuan provincial industry technology innovation leagues.

The university is a nationally planned university for excellent engineer education and cultivation, a national language popularization base, a national intellectual property pilot university, a data China “100 project” construction university of the Ministry of Education, one of the first batch of institutions of higher learning for sci-tech achievement conversion and technological transfer base, a nationally planned university for college students innovation and entrepreneurship training, one of the first batch of postdoctoral innovation and practice bases of Sichuan province, an overseas students pilot base of Sichuan province, and one of the first batch of innovation reform pilot universities of Sichuan province, and one of Sichuan provincial high-tech industry demo science units. We have established Chinese Baijiu Institute with Wuliangye Group under the authority of China Liquor Association, and Chinese Lantern Institute with Chinese Arts and Crafts Society, Zigong Lantern Group and Zigong Culture and Tourism Investment Company.

The university has empowered high quality development and responded to the “Belt and Road Initiative”, systematically developing a great many industrial institutes of Chinese Baijiu Institute, Chinese Lantern Institute, Salt Food Cuisine Institute, Fluoric Material Industry Institute, Emergency Handling and Safety Institute, and UAV industry Institute. We have established the school motto of “profound virtue for sciences, and strong motivation for engineering”, putting forward the development philosophy of “free mind, brave innovation and great undertaking for super-excellence and leap-forward development”, and bringing about the “652” spirit of the “ embracing the world and homeland, I am the first and bravest one of undertaking the cause of constructing the country with a spirit of stay-unrested progressive development”, demonstrating a distinctive philosophy system of running school.
