School of Foreign Languages has a 50-year history of foreign language programs running to date, boasting a faculty team of rational age, knowledge, specialty, and profession title structures, with rich teaching experience and outstanding scientific ability. Currently, the school has 152 faculty members, including 34 professors and associate professors, 41 doctoral degree holders, and doctoral candidates, appointing 7-9 foreign teachers permanently. The school offers five undergraduate programs in English, Japanese, Translation, Spanish, and Portuguese, and one master’s degree program in discipline teaching (English). Now, there are more than 1,600 students in the school.
The school insists on the education philosophy of “profound foundation, wide caliber, strong capability, and innovation priority” for talent cultivation, sparing no effort in building distinctive and advantageous programs and cultivating “foreign language +” cross-disciplinary and practical talents in line with the needs of the nation and social development. The international baijiu talent cultivation mode of the school—international sommelier class—has won the wide attention of domestic and international media, and 50% of the talents it has cultivated have entered liquor-making enterprises and relevant groups, winning unanimous compliments from them and contributing to promoting baijiu internalization. Currently, the cooperated customization cultivation mode between the school and enterprises has adequately showcased the discipline advantage and talent advantage of Sichuan University of Science and Engineering as the cradle of Chinese baijiu talent cultivation, offering talent and intellectual support for economic and social development of South Sichuan and around China.
The school now has three municipal and provincial department-level scientific research bases or centers—the Research Center for International Transmission of Sichuan Liquor Culture, Popularization Center for the Dissemination of the Local Cultures of Southern Sichuan Province, The Popularization Base for the Dissemination of the Local Cultures—and two training bases: China (Sichuan) Foreign Aid Medical Teams and Sichuan University of Science and Engineering’s Portuguese Training Base under the collaboration with Sichuan Health Commission, and Smart Translation Practice Education Base.
The school insists on the development concept of “industry, study and research” integration, sparing no effort in conducting scientific research and school-enterprise cooperation, making some contribution to local education development and distinctive culture’s international dissemination. In recent years, the school has signed an RMB 6.15 million strategic cooperation agreement with Yibin Wuliangye Group, having incubated a great many baijiu culture dissemination monograph achievements and promoted school and enterprise joint win-win development. In December 2021, A Chinese-English Dictionary of Chinese Baijiu Culture—the first Chinese-English dictionary of Chinese Baijiu in the world was published by The Commercial Press, winning the third prize in the Sichuan Provincial Social Science Award in 2022. Meanwhile, the school has also published four sets of Chinese baijiu cultural dissemination research works, including Time-Honored Chinese Baijiu Brand, Chinese Baijiu Culture and Industry, Chinese Baijiu Tasting, and Chinese Baijiu Geography. In 2019, the school signed a RMB 1.8 million Salt Industry English archives translation cooperation agreement with Zigong Municipal Archives Bureau, translating English salt history archives of Zigong, Sichuan in the period of the Republic of China into Chinese, filling the history gap related to salt history archives of Zigong in the period of the Republic of China.
In recent years, the school has relied on various platforms and made a lot of achievements, winning 20 provincial and ministry-level scientific research projects and publishing more than 300 research papers, five academic monographs, five compiled works, 16 textbooks, and 21 translations, with many achievements winning provincial and municipal philosophy and social science awards and Sichuan Provincial Tianfu Translation Award. Especially the “Wuliangye Liquor Culture International Communication” project undertaken by the school has made a series of remarkable achievements, producing positive impact in China and even around the world, contributing a lot to the development of Chinese baijiu industry and overseas dissemination of traditional Chinese culture and baijiu culture.
