About us

The School of Materials Science and Engineering originated from the Materials Corrosion and Protection, the Polymer Science of the Southwest Branch of the East China Institute of Chemical Technology (now East China University of Science and Technology) in 1965. It has developed a distinctive direction of education with a focus on material corrosion and protection and has also established national-level first-class undergraduate majors, national-level comprehensive reform pilot majors, and national-level first-class undergraduate courses. The field of materials science has entered the top 1% in the global ESI rankings. It is one of the advantageous schools with a long history of education, distinctive disciplinary features, and strong capabilities at the university.
The school boasts a highly qualified faculty team known for its expertise, dedication, and enthusiasm. It comprises nearly 100 faculty members, including 17 esteemed professors, over 70% of teachers holding doctoral degrees, and more than 20 renowned experts, such as those receiving special allowances from the State Council, members of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, and distinguished teachers in Sichuan Province.
Based on its traditional strengths, the school has established a master’s degree program in the first-level discipline of “Materials Science and Engineering” and a professional degree program in “Materials and Chemical Engineering”. Moreover, it offers undergraduate majors including materials science and engineering, polymer materials and engineering, inorganic non-metallic materials engineering, and new energy materials and devices. Within the materials science and engineering major, there are two main directions: corrosion and protection, and metal materials. The school has developed national first-class undergraduate courses such as “Metal Corrosion Theory and Corrosion Control” and “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice of Anti-corrosion Engineering”. It has over 2,000 undergraduate students and over 120 master’s students.
Faculty is committed to strengthening its school through scientific research. Several academic research platforms has been established to promote the success of students’ academic careers, including the Sichuan Provincial Key Laboratory of Material Corrosion and Protection, the Sichuan Special Carbon Graphite Materials Engineering Technology Research Center (co-built), and the Sichuan Corrosion and Protection Society. In recent years, it has successfully undertaken over 200 scientific research projects, including more than 20 national projects and more than 50 provincial and ministerial projects. The school has received scientific research funds totaling more than 50 million yuan and has published over 300 academic research papers, with more than 100 of them being included in SCI. Additionally, the school has been granted more than 100 national invention patents and has formulated (revised) more than 20 national and industry standards. Furthermore, it has compiled 18 textbooks and handouts. It has established strategic cooperative relationships with major enterprises such as Yuanli Chemical Group and Sichuan Youhua Group and has completed the transformation of more than 30 scientific and technological achievements, winning over 30 scientific and technological achievement awards. As a result, the college has been awarded the provincial advanced platform for scientific and technological innovation by the Sichuan Provincial Department of Science and Technology.
The school focuses on cultivating students’ comprehensive quality, practical skills, and research abilities. It has signed teaching practice base agreements with more than 30 enterprises and institutions and regularly sends students to sister universities for exchange and learning. In recent years, college students have participated in more than 100 innovation and entrepreneurship training programs, winning over 150 awards in various national and provincial discipline competitions such as the “National Metallographic Competition”, “Internet+” competition, and “Challenge Cup” competition. Among these awards, there are more than 40 national and provincial awards. In recent years, the demand for graduates has exceeded supply, earning widespread praise from employers. Especially in the field of corrosion and protection, the school has cultivated nearly 2500 graduates, earning it the reputation of being the “Cradle of Corrosion and Protection Talent” in the industry.
