The Material Corrosion and Protection Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province, hereinafter referred to as the laboratory, was approved for establishment by the Science and Technology Department of Sichuan Province in July 2011. The laboratory is positioned with a focus on “based in Sichuan, serving the western region, and facing the entire country.” It closely revolves around the scientific problems and engineering challenges related to corrosion and protection in key development areas of Sichuan Province, such as new materials, new energy, petrochemicals, energy-saving and environmental protection equipment, electronic devices, and other industrial sectors. The laboratory actively engages in fundamental research, technological development, talent cultivation, academic exchange, and consulting services in the field of corrosion theory and corrosion control, with its goal being to provide scientific theories and technical support for corrosion control, reducing corrosion-related incidents, and achieving long-term safe operation in key areas and industries in Sichuan Province and the western region. The research directions mainly include corrosion electrochemistry, material surface technology, chemical engineering new materials, and corrosion protection engineering.
The laboratory currently has 83 permanent research staff, including 27 senior researchers, 18 associate researchers, 61 individuals with doctoral degrees, 1 expert receiving special government allowances from the State Council, and 12 talents at the provincial level. The laboratory covers an area of over 4000 square meters, with equipment valued at over 40 million yuan, holding significant influence in Sichuan Province and even in the western region of China.
In the past five years, the laboratory has undertaken more than 600 research projects, including 20 national-level projects, 48 provincial and ministerial-level projects, and 475 projects in collaboration with enterprises. We have published 539 research papers, obtained 116 granted invention patents, achieved 53 technology transfers, contributed to the establishment of 17 national standards and 3 industry standards, and received over 10 provincial and ministerial-level awards for scientific and technological progress. In recognition of its contributions, the laboratory was honored in 2021 and 2022 by the Science and Technology Department of Sichuan Province as an “Advanced Platform for Science and Technology Innovation in Sichuan Province” and an “Advanced Key Laboratory in Management and Operation.”
