The School of Mechanical Engineering originated from the undergraduate program in Chemical Equipment and Machinery at the Southwest Branch of East China Institute of Chemical Technology, founded in 1965. It was one of the two departments when Sichuan Institute of Chemical Technology was established in 1979. Originally named the Department of Chemical Machinery, it was later renamed the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Mechatronics Engineering. In 2008, it was officially named the Mechanical Engineering College. In 2001, it was approved as the talent cultivation base for mechanical engineering undergraduates in Sichuan Province. The college currently offers six undergraduate programs: Process Equipment and Control Engineering, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, Materials Forming and Control Engineering, Industrial Design, Vehicle Engineering, and Mechanical Electronic Engineering. Among these, the Process Equipment and Control Engineering program is recognized as a national characteristic specialty, the second batch of national excellent engineer education training program, and was accredited by the International Engineering Education Professional Certification in 2019. It was also designated as one of the first national first-class professional construction points. The Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation program is a provincial characteristic specialty, part of Sichuan Province’s excellent engineer education training program, and was accredited by the International Engineering Education Professional Certification in 2012. It was also designated as a national first-class professional construction point, while Industrial Design is a provincial first-class specialty. The school has master’s degree authorization in the first-level discipline of Mechanical Engineering, offering specializations in Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation, Mechanical Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Design and Theory, and Process Equipment and Machinery in four second-level disciplines. The Mechanical specialty degree category includes Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering, and Intelligent Manufacturing Technology. The school has established cross-disciplinary programs in Intelligent Manufacturing Equipment and Systems. Currently, there are over 300 master’s students and over 3000 undergraduate students enrolled in the college.
