As the Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the traditional Chinese festivals, approached, the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange and the International College organized an event on the evening of September 13 at Yibin Campus (A4-107) to introduce new international students to Chinese traditional festival culture.
On behalf of the university, Fu Qingshan, vice Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange and Vice Dean of the International College, welcomed the new students from 21 countries, including Russia, Laos, Kazakhstan, and Morocco. He also offered valuable advice for their future academic and daily lives. In addition, the International College conducted safety education ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival, enhancing students' awareness of fire safety, theft prevention, drowning prevention, fraud prevention, and accident prevention, strengthening their safety and legal awareness.
During the Mid-Autumn Festival celebration, many newly arrived international students had not yet learned Chinese, among whom some could not well communicate in English. In order to help all students better understand and learn about the Mid-Autumn Festival, the International College invited senior international students to share the story of the festival in their native languages. Presenters used English in their PowerPoint slides to ensure all participants could follow along. Lina, an undergraduate student from the School of Economics, gave a speech in Russian on the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival and how Chinese people celebrate it. Kong Ruxue, a master's student from the Law School, spoke in Lao about the traditional customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival and how the festival evokes memories of home and family. Liu Wanhe, an exchange student from Brazil, gave a speech in Portuguese, comparing China’s "Mid-Autumn Festival" with Brazil’s "Festa Junina" (June Festival), explaining how both festivals are related to harvest celebrations and express gratitude for nature's gifts.
This event allowed the new international students to learn about and understand Chinese traditional festival culture, while also making them feel the care and attention the university offers to newcomers. It helped promote cultural integration and fostered a deeper understanding among students from diverse backgrounds. SUSE is committed to creating an open and inclusive learning environment for international students, helping them better integrate into Chinese culture and adapt quickly to life and studies at SUSE.
