On the morning of September 4, Duval de Vasconcelos Barros, Deputy Consul General of the Brazilian Consulate General in Chengdu, led a delegation from Mato Grosso State, Brazil, to the Libaihe Campus of Sichuan University of Science and Engineering (SUSE) for a discussion. President Tuo Xianguo of SUSE warmly welcomed the guests in Meeting Room 901.

Mr. Tuo extended a warm welcome to the visiting guests and introduced the deep friendship and existing cooperation between SUSE and Brazil. He highlighted the strong ties with Mato Grosso State. In 2019, a delegation from the state’s government visited SUSE, expressing interest in collaboration in engineering, law, sports, and language studies with SUSE. In 2021, SUSE and the representatives from Mato Grosso State in Brazil further exchanged views on higher education cooperation and held a dialogue on educational innovation, culminating in the signing of a higher education cooperation agreement with the Mato Grosso International Exchange Center. By the end of 2022, SUSE has reached agreements with several Brazilian universities on student exchange programs. Up to March of the year of 2024, a total of 40 Portuguese major students of SUSE have been sent to Brazilian universities for exchange studies and 16 exchange students from Brazilian institutions have studied in SUSE. Notably, three students of SUSE have been approved as international Chinese language volunteers and will soon travel to Brazil to fulfill their volunteer commitments.

President Tuo Xianguo also emphasized that enterprises play a vital role in driving national development. He noted that SUSE has always been committed to university-industry collaboration and expressed hope for establishing partnerships with more Brazilian universities, institutions, and enterprises across various fields to better serve the economic and social development of both regions. On behalf of the university, he extended a warm invitation to the visiting entrepreneurs to visit SUSE frequently to deepen mutual understanding and strengthen friendships.

Duval de Vasconcelos Barros, Deputy Consul General of the Brazilian Consulate General in Chengdu, expressed gratitude for the university's warm reception and provided a brief overview of Brazil and Mato Grosso State. He noted that this year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Brazil, coinciding with the recent establishment of the Brazilian Consulate General in Chengdu. He was impressed by the university's development of its Portuguese language program and expressed optimism about future collaboration. He encouraged Portuguese language students to deepen their understanding of Brazil, learn more about the country, and pursue study and exchange opportunities there.

Mirael Praeiro from the Mato Grosso State Government's Small and Micro Enterprise Support Center, as a business representative, expressed a strong interest in collaborating with SUSE in talent exchange and recruitment. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of China-Brazil diplomatic relations, the center plans to offer more study and work opportunities in Brazil for university faculty and students. He also expressed hope for expanded cooperation in other areas and extended an invitation to SUSE to participate in the cooperation forum scheduled for December in Brazil.

Afterward, both parties exchanged gifts and took group photos to commemorate the occasion.

The meeting was chaired by Li Yongmei, Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange and Dean of the International College. Also in attendance were Sun Shan, Director of the SUSE Administrative Office; Wu Yadong, Director of the Science and Technology Office; Liao Yinghua, Dean of the School of Civil Engineering; as well as faculty and student representatives from the School of Civil Engineering and the Portuguese Department of the School of Foreign Languages.
