To enhance the perception of the profound connotations of Zigong’s salt culture and dinosaur culture among the international students studying in Sichuan University of Science and Engineering( SUSE), and deepen their experience of Chinese native customs and cultures, and enable them to practice and improve their Chinese language skills in practice, on May 24th, 126 international students from 12 different countries in SUSE went to Zigong’s Shenhai Well, the Salt Industry History Museum and the Zigong Dinosaur Museum to carry out Chinese cultural practice activities.
As the “Millennium Salt Capital” and the “Hometown of Dinosaurs”, Zigong, with a profound historical and cultural heritage, is an important destination for the international students studying in SUSE to understand Chinese culture and local humanities. During the cultural experience activities, the international students listened attentively and observed carefully. They felt the historical inheritance of the salt culture in the Salt Industry History Museum and took pictures everywhere in the Xiqin Guild Hall; they watched the ancient salt-making method at Shenhai Well and tasted the warm, freshly made coarse salt; they were amazed by the “dominant species on the earth” from the Jurassic period in the Dinosaur Museum. Meanwhile, they did not forget their course tasks, asking questions to the guides or having paired discussions from time to time, and taking pictures to record the parts that interested them. One international student said that she hoped she could “bring her parents to visit the amazing Dinosaur Museum again” when they come to China to travel next time.
Cultural learning is an important part of the curriculum in the Chinese language learning stage. Besides cultural practice activities, the International College also offers a variety of cultural theme lectures with rich and diverse contents, including ethnic minority cultures, paper-cutting, calligraphy, Baduanjin (a kind of traditional Chinese qigong exercise), and Hanfu. These lectures organically combine the classroom education of Chinese culture with practical activities throughout the cultivation process, enriching the overseas study life of international students in China and inspiring their enthusiasm for in-depth learning and understanding of Chinese culture. The cultural practice activities with personal experience and feeling enable international students studying in China to further perceive today’s China, convey the voice of China, and tell good Chinese stories.
