During the local time from April 17th to 27th , as one of the members of the Sichuan Education Delegation led by Yu Xiaoqi, director of the Sichuan Provincial Department of Education, President Tuo Xianguo visited New Zealand, Chile, and Brazil on behalf of Sichuan University of Science and Engineering. During the visit, Tuo Xianguo actively demonstrated the new achievements and new image of SUSE in terms of open education and characteristic development, laying a foundation for the educational cooperation between SUSE and New Zealand, adding new impetus to the higher education cooperation in South America, and further enhancing the level of the university's education in opening up to the outside world and international exchange and cooperation.
During the visit to New Zealand, Tuo Xianguo attended the China (Sichuan) - New Zealand Economic, Trade and Cultural Promotion and Exchange Conference, where he publicized and showcased the distinctive advantages of SUSE in the fields of discipline construction, talent cultivation, scientific research and social services. He also participated in a symposium with the Chinese Scientists Association in New Zealand and exchanged ideas with Professor Hu Aiguo, president of the Association, representatives of Chinese scientists in New Zealand and the responsible comrades from the Cultural and Educational Office of the Consulate General in Auckland. In addition, he visited Massey University Albany Campus (Auckland) in New Zealand and held a discussion with the Vice President for International Affairs of the university and the heads of relevant departments.
In Chile, the Sichuan Education Delegation visited the University of Chile and had an exchange and discussion with the university's administrators. During the meeting, Tuo Xianguo mainly promoted SUSE's international education promotion plan and the policy environment for student recruitment and talent introduction. He said that Sichuan University of Science & Engineering offers a major in Spanish, which creates favorable conditions for the "Mutual Exchange Student Program" between the two universities. By carrying out language, cultural and art exchange projects, language barriers can be overcome, laying a solid foundation for in-depth cooperation in various aspects of the educational fields of the two universities.In addition, the education delegation also participated in the China (Sichuan) - Chile Economic, Trade and Cultural Promotion and Exchange Conference and the Wuliangye "Harmony with the World" Global Tour - Chile Stop event.
During their stay in Brazil, the education delegation successively visited institutions and schools such as the Brazilian Chinese Cultural Exchange Association, the Rio International School of China, the Federal University of Pernambuco, the University of São Paulo, the São Paulo State University, and the Confucius Institute at the São Paulo State University.At the symposium with the Brazilian Chinese Cultural Exchange Association, the education delegation had a discussion with Wang Weiyu, the Deputy Consul General of China in Rio de Janeiro, Zeng Can, the Consul, Peng Jianbo, the Acting Chairman of the Association, Huang Yanjuan, the Executive Vice Chairman, and Wu Xiaoman, the Secretary-General.Tuo Xianguo said that Sichuan University of Science & Engineering is the first public university in Sichuan Province to offer a major in Portuguese. It is committed to cultivating more high-level, innovative and compound foreign language talents. Meanwhile, the university also offers advantageous majors such as biological brewing, new material development, and intelligent chemical engineering, which provide strong intellectual support and talent guarantee for promoting the cooperation between our university and Brazilian Chinese enterprises.
During the visit to the Federal University of Pernambuco, Tuo Xianguo introduced the basic situation of the university's higher education exchange and cooperation activities in Brazil in recent years, as well as various online and offline exchange activities carried out with the Federal University of Pernambuco. He said that the cooperation between the two universities has been progressing smoothly. Through various language and cultural exchange programs, the teachers and students of the two universities have enhanced their understanding and deepened their friendship. In the future, the two universities can deepen their cooperation and promote mutual development in areas such as scientific and technological innovation, talent cultivation, and discipline construction.During this trip, Tuo Xianguo also signed a letter of intent on cooperation between the two universities with Alfredo Gomez, the President of the Federal University of Pernambuco.In addition, under the leadership of Director Yu Xiaoqi, Tuo Xianguo and the members of the education delegation visited eight students from our university who were studying as exchange students at the Federal University of Pernambuco. Seeing "the students from our own university" in a foreign land, Tuo Xianguo warmly encouraged them to cherish the learning opportunities, strive to establish their individual comparative advantages, enhance their core competitiveness, and strive to become outstanding talents with international competitiveness.
During the visit to the University of São Paulo, Tuo Xianguo signed a memorandum of inter-university cooperation with the university. He said that Brazil is an important educational partner of our university in South America. He hoped that exchanges and cooperation could be carried out with the university in aspects such as teacher-student exchanges, professor visits, academic cooperation, scientific and technological innovation, and cultural exchanges, so as to jointly draw a new vision for education.
The Sichuan Education Delegation also visited the São Paulo State University and had a discussion with Mesa Furlan, the Executive Vice President of the university, and Ye Dan, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute. Combining the characteristic and advantageous disciplines of the university as well as its school-running mode of integrating industry and education, Tuo Xianguo started from key discipline majors such as bioengineering, chemical engineering, food science, fermentation engineering, and intelligent chemical engineering to introduce the school-running philosophy and development plan of the university. He also said that the scientific research cooperation with the university in leading fields such as biotechnology and biomass energy research and development would be strengthened.
The opening up of education to the outside world is a distinct feature and an important driving force for educational modernization. In recent years, the university has actively responded to the “One Belt and One Road” of the country, effectively promoted higher education cooperation with countries along the “One Belt and One Road”, and continuously enhanced the level of international education. This overseas visit is an important measure for the university to implement the Education Action Plan for Promoting the Co-construction of the “One Belt and One Road” in Sichuan Province.For Sichuan University of Science & Engineering, this visit is of great significance. It has effectively opened a new chapter in the cooperation with New Zealand, consolidated and strengthened the friendly relationships with important partner institutions of higher education in South American countries, greatly promoted the exchange and cooperation with universities and scientific research institutions in the visited countries, and played a positive role in promoting the university's strategy of open education and international development in a down-to-earth manner.
