the Artificial Intelligence Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province

The Artificial Intelligence Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province (hereinafter referred to as: the Laboratory), relying on Sichuan University of Science & Engineering  and the State Grid Sichuan Electric Power Corporation Electric Power Science Research Institute, prepared to establish the Artificial Intelligence Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province (University) in 2001, and passed the acceptance of the Sichuan's Education Department in 2007. In 2009, it was accepted as the Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province by the Science and Technology Department of Sichuan Province. The laboratory deeply integrates new technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and Internet of Things, closely follows the development trend of artificial intelligence, and carries out scientific researches in the fields of intelligent brewing, intelligent electric power, non-contact inspection of nuclear wastes, safety inspection of bridges, intelligent control of light industry, chemical industry and intelligent manufacturing. takes the initiative to serve the needs of regional economic and social development, and has formed a research system of intelligent detection, intelligent information processing, and intelligent control, as well as a laboratory characteristic of "research learning integration, industry education integration, and distinctive development".

The laboratory currently has 70 researchers, including 22 professors, 33 associate senior titles, 15 intermediate titles, 4 Changjiang Distinguished Professors of the Ministry of Education, 7 State Department special allowance experts, 1 Winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 4 academic and technical leaders in Sichuan Province, 2 teaching masters in Sichuan Province, 4 reserve candidates for academic and technical leaders in Sichuan Province, and 3 scientific and technological innovation research teams in Sichuan Province. The research team has a reasonable structure in terms of education, age, title and academic background, and is a vibrant and innovative research team.

Laboratory has always been in-depth implementation of the General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speeches and instructions on the visit to Sichuan. Meanwhile, under the leadership of Sichuan Provincial Department of Science and Technology, the laboratory earnestly implements the spirit of relevant documents and meetings at national and provincial levels, faces the needs of regional economic and social development, faces the frontiers of scientific and technological development, and proactively adapts to the national innovation-driven economic development, the construction of "One Belt and One Road", the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and the construction of the Twin Cities Economic Circle of Chengdu-Chongqing Region and other major strategies. In addition, the laboratory takes the initiative to integrate into the "5+1" modern industrial system, "4+6" modern service industry system and "10+3" modern agricultural system of Sichuan Province, and widely carries out the application development and technical services of artificial intelligence, and makes efforts in both scientific innovation and achievements. At present, the laboratory has formed "one Baijiu, one Nuclear and one electric" (i.e., intelligent brewing, intelligent nuclear technology, intelligent electric power) artificial intelligence industry research characteristics, the laboratory's main characteristics and advantages are reflected in:

(1) The Laboratory has a highly qualified team in terms of human resources

The laboratory has gathered a group of research talents in the field of artificial intelligence, who have rich practical experience and deep academic attainments. These outstanding researchers provide a solid foundation for the laboratory's scientific work, and they continue to push forward the development of AI technology through their innovative thinking and high level of research.

(2) The laboratory has certain advantages in terms of research equipment

The laboratory is equipped with a series of advanced equipment and instruments, which provide solid support for related research with their complete functions and accurate data acquisition capabilities. At the same time, the laboratory has good data analysis and computational capabilities, and can make full use of big data and artificial intelligence technology to provide strong data support for research in the field of intelligent manufacturing.

(3) Close cooperation between laboratories and enterprises, focusing on the transformation of scientific and technological achievements and industrialization application

Through the cooperation with enterprises in various industries, the laboratory continuously researches the market demand, deeply understands the real needs of industrial enterprises, and rapidly transforms the research results into practical applications. This close industry-university-research cooperation model allows the laboratory's technology to be truly marketed and successfully applied in various industrial fields.

(4) Focusing on national development strategies and technological needs, the Laboratory deeply promotes basic theoretical research on artificial intelligence

The laboratory conducts researches in deep neural network and brain-like chip design, intelligent information fusion technology, big data analysis and mining technology jointly driven by knowledge and data, and multi-intelligence body and cooperative interaction technology. The lab has completed the key project of Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Department, "Design and Development of High-Efficiency and Low-Power Consumption Artificial Intelligence Chip Based on Novel Stochastic Computing", which has solved the contradiction between low-power application requirements and future AI chip computing power, and proposed a novel synaptic plasticity-like computing architecture with stochastic computing, with a processing speed of 80 TFLOPS, hardware efficiency reaches 3.5TFLOPs/s/mm2 and power efficiency reaches 8FLOPs/s/W.

In-depth research in intelligent inspection perception to obtain innovative results. The laboratory solved the helicopter low visibility (such as night flight, dense fog, smoke and dust, etc.) flight safety needs, helicopter-mounted multi-sensor power line detection system as an entry point, established a multi-sensor data fusion based on multi-sensor power line composite detection technology, and completed the corresponding experimental validation, so as to provide technical support for the development of helicopter-mounted anti-collision and obstacle avoidance system engineering prototype based on multi-source data fusion processing and to solve the problem of flight safety and obstacle avoidance of the general aviation aircraft in the conditions of low visibility.

The laboratory has carried out research on wireless environment sensing and distributed information processing technologies, solving the problems of spectrum access and interference cancellation in wireless networks for the realization of full-duplex cognition and low-power distributed information processing. It also solved the problems of main user hiding, static perception and residual self-interference caused by channel fading and interference for realizing low-power consumption and real-time processing requirements.

(5) Innovative intelligent brewing technology and equipment, service intelligent brewing of Baijiu automation upgrade

The laboratory focuses on the development strategy of industry transformation and upgrading, which is "to promote the transformation of Baijiu from the traditional workshop production mode relying on manual experience to the data-driven scientific production mode", with the goal of establishing an intelligent Baijiu brewing process, realizing on-line non-destructive testing of the brewing process, and the automation, informatization and intelligence of the whole process, adopting the cross-fertilization of modern control technology and Baijiu brewing technology, and through the technology of artificial intelligence, control science, and big data, and guided by the artificial sensory evaluation, digging out the key process parameters, establishing the intelligent evaluation and decision-making system, as well as realizing the complex coupling parameter self-adaptive adjustment and global control of the brewing equipment.   

The scientific research achievements accumulated by the laboratory over the years include Baijiu mapping identification system, online monitoring technology and method of brewing process, Baijiu analysis technology based on big data, intelligent brewing equipment, brewing big data centralized monitoring system, etc., which has constructed a whole set of automated production and evaluation system, and has already served Wuliangye, Luzhou Laojiao, and Shede in the Six Golden Flowers of Sichuan Baijiu and a number of famous Baijiu enterprises outside of the province, and realized industrial demonstration and application. The series of technical achievements are conducive to the enhancement of the overall technical level of intelligent brewing of Baijiu enterprises, solve the technical bottlenecks of the industry transformation and upgrading, realize the scientific and digital brewing of Baijiu, obtain a number of basic, key and replicable intelligent brewing results, and participate in the formulation of seven industry standards, which will contribute to the construction of the standardization system of the traditional industry, accelerate the supply-side reform of China's Baijiu products, and improve the competitiveness of the products.

Laboratory actively innovate intelligent brewing technology and equipment, service Baijiu intelligent brewing automation upgrade. Meanwhile, the laboratory participates in brewing-related technological innovations, and has won a number of awards such as the Second Prize of Sichuan Provincial Computer Science and Technology Progress Award, the Second Prize of Henan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, the Second Prize and Third Prize of Sichuan Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, and the Second Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of the China Wine Industry Association.

(6) Actively transforming the results of intelligent monitoring technology to serve the construction industry and nuclear industry safety

The laboratory takes prestressed concrete beams as objects and innovates the testing method of concrete elastic modulus based on the propagation theory of impact elastic waves. The "non-destructive testing and monitoring system for prestressed concrete beams based on modulus of elasticity" developed by the laboratory has been transformed and marketed by Sichuan Shengtuo Testing Technology Co., Ltd. and the products have been metrologically certified by the National Institute of Measurement and Testing Technology, and the results of the promotion and application of the results of the cumulative output value of more than 50 million yuan, which has been appraised to be at the international advanced level. The application of this achievement can not only effectively avoid direct and indirect economic losses caused by bridge collapse, but also provide basic data for optimal reinforcement. This achievement won the third prize of Sichuan Provincial Scientific and Technological Progress in 2018.

The Laboratory closely follows the real needs of the country in the fields of nuclear power, nuclear technology, nuclear counter-terrorism, nuclear security and nuclear emergency response, etc. It mainly carries out basic theoretical research in the areas of new theories, methods and technologies for detecting α, β, γ and neutrons, and conducts applied basic research in the areas of new detectors, pulse shaping and spectral analysis, and equipment development, breaks through the key technologies, and solves a number of key scientific problems in the process of the research and development of new detectors. At the same time, artificial intelligence will be applied in the field of nuclear technology, through face recognition, intelligent security, deep learning, deep image recognition and other related technology research, and ultimately realize the cross-disciplinary application of research results.

Facing the demand for environmental safety monitoring technology of nuclear-related bases, the laboratory has completed the transformation of a number of key technologies, such as the research on nuclear radiation environmental monitoring methods and instrument development, and the research on geological environmental monitoring methods and instrument development, and has developed new instruments and systems based on the γ-scanning detection technology of nuclear waste barrel chromatography and the detection technology of low background γ-spectrometry, etc., and has initially formed a comprehensive safety monitoring technology and methodology system with the core of the monitoring methods of the radiation environment and the geological environment. The achievements have been applied and served in the comprehensive evaluation of the geological environment of many nuclear bases and the subsequent selection of sites for major projects. At the same time, the laboratory is oriented to the "civil-military integration" strategy, some of the instruments developed by the laboratory directly serve the military major projects. The laboratory is actively integrated into the construction of "South Sichuan Accelerator Application Center", and has successfully set up the nuclear energy development projects of the State Administration of Science. Technology and Industry for National Defense, such as "Research on Measuring and Detecting Technology of Nuclide Sections of *** Components" and "Research on Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis Technology of *****".

(7) Research and development of field operation inspection robots and substation panoramic monitoring equipment to serve the operation and security of the power industry

The lab investigated a novel visual navigation system for robots, which extractd the posture features of the observed objects by means of rule-based feature recognition, and employed machine learning to expand and enrich the library of example features, so as to improve the recognition success rate of the robotic vision system. With this as the core, lab have developed and realized an autonomous navigation robot to serve the electric power work site. This technical achievement serves to guarantee the electric power industry, realizing the replacement of manual work by mechanized production and the reduction of human operation by automated control, which significantly improves the scientific and technological guarantee ability of the enterprise's safety production. In 2018 the results have been popularized and applied in Sichuan Yibin UHV Management Office, Panzhihua Power Supply Company, Shuneng Power Hi-Tech Branch, as well as the State Grid Sichuan Electric Power Scientific Research Institute Tibet Interconnection Project. 

Laboratory research and development of the "substation remote viewing system three-dimensional optimization design and full-scene testing technology and application" by the China Electricity Council of the project carried out scientific and technological achievements appraisal of the project results of the overall technology to reach the international advanced level, including intelligent deployment and the formation of its knowledge base method to reach the international leading level. The project results have been applied in power supply enterprises, designing institutes, manufacturing enterprises, research institutes and other units, which have produced significant economic and social benefits and have good prospects for popularization and application. The project results won the third prize of Sichuan Provincial Scientific and Technological Progress in 2021.

(8) Utilizing intelligent technology to serve the Zigong colored lantern industry

The laboratory actively participates in the construction of Colored Lantern College and China Colored Lantern Industry Research Institute jointly built by Sichuan University of Science and Engineering, Zigong Municipal People's Government and Zigong Lantern Cultural Industry Group Co. and actively explores the establishment of industrialized production standards for Chinese colored lanterns. 

The laboratory will combine artificial intelligence technology and Zigong lantern folk culture, based on big data, cloud computing, edge computing and other artificial intelligence technology will be "wisdom" brain given to Zigong lanterns, to achieve the lantern industry's technological transformation and upgrading, and to realize the lanterns can think, react, and interact with the wisdom of the action, and to drive the development of the Zigong lantern tourism chain. Laboratory developed by the metaverse of intelligent colored lights system has served the Zigong colored lantern industry, has been with the Zigong Light Trade Group Co., Ltd. technology promotion and application of demonstration of cooperation attempts to significantly reduce the environmental pollution caused by waste, improve the management benefits of the colored lights system and safety warning capabilities.

(9) Accumulating technological advantages in intelligent unmanned systems and carrying out industry support services with drones as the characteristic

The laboratory actively supports the "Intelligent Unmanned Systems Research Institute and UAV Industry College" jointly established by Sichuan University of Science and Engineering and Zigong Municipal People's Government. Taking UAVs and their applications as research objects, the laboratory gives full play to the key technologies of artificial intelligence accumulated in autonomous flight control, visual navigation, remote sensing and sensing, inspection and testing of aviation parts and components, and air and space communication, and vigorously expands the technological advantages of intelligent unmanned systems driven by artificial intelligence, forming the research characteristics of intelligent unmanned systems represented by UAVs. The laboratory supports the construction and operation of the institute and industrial college in Zigong Aviation Industrial Park, providing technical support and team incubation.

Through the support channels of Intelligent Unmanned Systems Research Institute and UAV Industry Academy, the laboratory has established close and continuous cooperation with UAV advantageous enterprises, such as Aerospace Industry Chengdu Aircraft Industry (Group) Limited Company, Sichuan Tengdun Science and Technology Company Limited, and China Electronics Technology Special Aircraft System Engineering Co., Ltd, and carried out in-depth research and development of intelligent unmanned systems technology with the core of artificial intelligence. The achievements of UAVs developed by the lab have been promoted and recognized by related enterprises, and were invited to exhibit at the "2023 UAV Equipment Conference", further demonstrating the lab's technological advantages to the UAV industry.
