About Us

The School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering holds three first-level disciplines (Chemistry, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Safety Science and Engineering), one first-level master’s discipline (Chemistry), and three awarding units for master’s degree (Resources and Environment, Materials and Chemical Engineering, and Pharmacy), among which, Chemistry and Environmental Science and Engineering are key disciplines of the school. Chemistry ranks top 1% in the ESI Global Rankings and be shortlisted in the U.S. News 2023 World University Rankings by Subject. Both Chemistry and Environmental Engineering are provincial first-level disciplines, while Environmental Engineering is also included in the Excellent Engineer Training Plan of Sichuan Province. The school holds important scientific research platforms, including the National Center for Urban Sewage Treatment and Recycling Engineering and Technological Research (South Sichuan), the University Key Laboratory of Sichuan for Green Catalysis, the School of Functional Materials of Sichuan University of Science and Engineering, the Institute of Light and Chemical Solid Wastes Recycling of Sichuan University of Science and Engineering, the Institute of Energetic Substances of Sichuan University of Science and Engineering, and Institute of Dual Carbon Science and Technology of Sichuan University of Science and Engineering. Moreover, the school hold two provincial-level demonstrative experimental teaching centers, the Chemical and Environmental Engineering Experimental Teaching Center, and the Chemical Safety Emergency Rescue Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center, and one industrial college – the College of Emergency and Safety.     

The school has 105 faculty and staff members, including 90 full-time teachers, 17 professors, and 24 associate professors, with 45.56% faculty and staff members holding senior professional post. Among them, 11 faculty members have an extensive overseas study experience and 59 of them hold terminal degrees (accounting for 65.6% of full-time teachers), 3 are doctoral candidates, 2 are doctoral tutors and 37 are master’s tutors. Moreover, among all the full-time and part-time teachers, 1 has been awarded  with the “National Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars”, 1 be shortlisted in the “National Ten-thousand Talents Plan”, 1 be shortlisted in the “Sichuan Thousand Overseas Short-Term Project”, 3 be shortlisted in the “Sichuan Youth Thousand Talents Plan”, 4 be awarded with the title of “Tianfu Talents”, 4 be backup of academic and technological leaders of Sichuan Province, 4 be shortlisted in the 10-million Talents Plan of the Capital of Salt, 1 be shortlisted in the Talents Plan of Yibin, 2 be awarded as Innovative Talents of the Capital of Salt, 2 be backup of academic and technological leaders of Zigong, 1 be academic and technological leader and 2 be backup of academic and technological leaders of the university, 5 won the Academician Yan Deyue’s Fellowship, and 1 be awarded as “652 Scholar”, and the school has 2 teams being recognized as “652” scientific research innovation teams .

The school has undertaken 17 projects funded by National NSFC and  more than 100 projects and grants from the Science and Technology Department of Sichuan, the Education Department of Sichuan, and the Science and Technology Bureau of Zigong in recent years,  actively published more than 600 scientific research papers, in which, more than 300 papers are published on SCI-indexed journal (100+ papers in JCR Q1 and Q2, 30+ be extensively referred in ESI, including Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, Separation and Purification Technology, Applied Surface Science, Chemical Reviews, Chemical Science, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Organic Letters, Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, Journal of Hazardous Materials, Inorganic Chemistry Frontiers, Analytical Chemistry, the Journal of Organic Chemistry, Chemical Communications, Chemistry - A European Journal, and Biosens Bioelectron et al. The school has received more than 50 national patent authorizations and realized industrialization of more than 10 achievements, with the maximum industrialized value of a single-achievement reaching RMB 2.5 million. The school has won two 2nd prizes and three 3rd prizes in the provincial-level award for science and technology achievements, and more than 20 city or department level awards for achievements and natural science papers. More than 45 provincial-level and university-level teaching reform projects have been finished here, with 45 papers on teaching reform and 8 textbooks on the same being published. The school now has 1 provincial-level excellent course (Inorganic Chemistry), and 5 university-level excellent courses (Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Advanced Organic Chemistry, and Environmental Monitoring).     

The school actively encourages students to participate in scholar and research activities and carry out diversified academic exchanges to facilitate the construction of academic atmosphere on the campus. In the latest three years, the pass rate of our students in the graduate entrance exam exceeds 20% on the average, with more than 100 students winning awards in national-level and provincial-level discipline competitions. The students of our school have totally applied for 25 national-level, 34 provincial-level and 70 university-level establishments of business startups and innovative practice projects. Nearly 50 of our students’ works won awards in the “Challenge Cup” science and technology innovation and startups contest of the university, including more than ten works winning provincial-level first, second, and third prizes. More than 70 of academic papers prepared by our students have been shortlisted in SCI, and the employment rate of our graduates has for years stayed beyond 92%, helping the school win extensive praise from employers and the whole society.    

The school has fully-equipped basic laboratories, professional laboratories and scientific research laboratories, with total laboratory area approaching 12,000 m2, which will further facilitate the discipline construction, talent cultivation, scientific research and social service of the school. The laboratory center of our school has the X-ray powder XRD, UV-Vis with dual-beam, IR, GC, LC, Alga count multifunctional bio-detector, automatic soil carbon flux determination system, total organic carbon/total nitrogen tester, automatic water quality analyzer, automatic surface area and pore size analyzer, UV-Vis with dual-beam, underwater photosynthesis rate tester, gas chromatograph, liquid chromatograph, ultra-high-speed centrifuge, preparative chromatography, surface photovoltaics, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, digital viscosity tester, and other large-scale precision instruments, with total value exceeding RMB 20 million. In the adjacent Analytical Testing Center, there are the 600MHz NMR, GC-MS, LC-MS, Raman, SEM, ICP-MS, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, et al, with total value approaching RMB 30 million, which satisfies the needs for scientific research and teaching. Moreover, the school has access to mainstream databases like ACS, Sciencedirect, Wiley, RSC, and Springer, a solid reference guarantee for talent cultivation and scientific research. The school has established good academic communication mechanism with Peking University, Nankai University, Sun Yat-sen University, Sichuan University, CAS Beijing Institute of Chemistry, and CAS Chengdu Institute of Organic Chemistry and CAS Chengdu Institute of Biology, which provides solid platforms for the students’ growth. In addition, the school has ceaselessly strengthened domestic and foreign academic exchange to enhance reputation of the school. Facing new development opportunities, the school will adhere to the school motto of “Great Virtue, Reasonable Attitude, Ambitious Dream, and Hard Working” and carry forward the “652” spirit featured as “Lofty Ideal of Developing the Nation, Great Commitment of Devoting my Life, and Pioneering Attitude of Forging ahead” to further enhance our strength, reinforce our features, and improve our quality of teaching and students to better serve the local economic and social development.
