On the afternoon of April 23, Professor Norehan from SEGI in Malaysia was invited to give an academic lecture on cross-cultural communication strategies for faculty and students of the School of Foreign Languages at the Li Baihe Campus of SUSE. The lecture was held in Classroom H1-113 with a full audience and in a vibrant and engaging atmosphere.
Starting with academic definitions, Professor Norehan analyzed the terminology discrepancies existing in the current field of cross-cultural studies. She pointed out that inconsistent conceptual definitions often become obstacles to understanding. From a global perspective, she then explained the core value of cross-cultural communication competence in modern education systems, particularly praising China's forward-looking initiatives in fostering such competencies.
During the session of practical guidance, Professor Norehan proposed three key strategies. Firstly, mastering basic language expressions should be based on respect of cultural norms. Secondly, it is important to cultivate an inclusive mindset in diverse contexts and the exclusive behaviors must be avoided. And thirdly, it is of great importance to maintain cultural sensitivity and steer clear of stereotypes. Regarding language application, she specifically recommended simplifying complex expressions and using professional jargon and slang with caution.
The lecture also explored the core concepts of communication, culture, and cross-cultural communication, illustrating practical skills such as active listening and open dialogue through vivid case studies.
Professor Norehan won enthusiastic applause from the audience, thanks to her profound knowledge and humorous teaching style.
